Six Dreams
BFA SENIOR THESIS EXHIBITION - 2021
JORDAN SCHNITZER MUSEUM OF ART at PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY
A SERIES OF SIX DREAMS
Lily of the Valley
2020.
Graphite, micron, watercolor. 24" x 18"
Lily stands before a portal; the valley. Her hair flows in the swirling breeze behind her.
Still in a dream state after reading the morning news of the shooting of Jacob Blake, Aug. 23, 2020, the vision of a beautiful black woman seemed to ask,
“What are you going to do about it?”
Me & Felix Victor
2019.
Acrylic on canvas. 35" x 26"
In the dawn of a dreamland I sit with my imaginary friend. I can see him, but you cannot.
Communication: A Dream of Two Tigers
2019.
Acrylic on canvas. 18" x 24"
After a night of debate with a friend, I dreamt of peoples' different levels of social skills and how some people like to dominate conversations. The tiger on the right was walking along when the tiger on the left jumed out of the bushes and tore the mandible off the first tiger and started tossing it in the air like a toy.
Dream Collage:
The King Calls
His Daughter Home
2020.
Charcoal, graphite, watercolor.
18" x 24"
I am the daughter. I am the king. I am all of these things. Elements of dreams I have dreamed before come together in this scene: the tower behind her head, the heart-tree at her back, her friendly big cat mirroring her body, the frog at her feet, the whale of the stormy depths, her father calling out to her to return home, and the pearlescent, rainbow-winged, serpent of healing swimming through the air toward the viewer. She is my soul; she is my healing.
It's Mr. Universe Himself
2019.
Acrylic on Canvas.
24" x 18"
In this dream the ground of primordial colors in chaos becomes differentiated, compartmentalized, and organized, until they finally settle into a natural order within the spiritual-blue, Atlas-like dreamfigure who carries the weight of his own world upon his shoulders.
Griffin Me
2019.
Acrylic on canvas. 24" x 18"
I dreamt I was with a priest in an old, black-stone church adorned with solid gold fixtures such as wall mounted candle holders, rosettes, and doorknobs. People began stealing the gold and the earth began to shake, “Boom, boom!” They panicked and scattered off with their loot. “Boom, boom!” I went to the window and became afraid when I saw giant furry legs walking down the street toward us. I recoiled behind the black-stone wall, but I had to see for myself. I looked again and saw an awesome sight; a giant griffin standing there, looking directly at me with my very own face.
